Reading No. 4 "Growing up in a Jewish Neighborhood" by Richard Chess
Title: Growing up
in a Jewish Neighborhood
Richard Chess |
Author: Richard
Chess
Date: 1992
Setting (time and place): By
its title, one could infer that the settings of this poem is a Jewish neighborhood
and all the difficulties that it represents.
Event (conflict, important
information, touching passage, question): This poem
is describing how difficult it was for people to grow up as Jewish some time
ago and how these people lived sacred of an uncertain future and in bad
conditions. The poem shows how Jewish people always wished for something better
and all the struggles they had to come through.
He: The only
things that are known are that the main character is a he and that he is Jewish.
He seems to be a person who is always dreaming about good things to happen
since his whole life he has been suffering because of his surroundings.
Memorable quote / favorite part: "He
wants to go / Where no one freezes/ When the phone rings."
How did it make me feel? / can I
make any connection to my life?
This poem made me feel very sad.
The conditions in which Jewish people lived are incredible for me. Just by
knowing about the holocaust and their story one can understand a little the way
in which they lived. I can't imagine myself living traumatized because of the
ringing of a phone, as expressed in the poem. They also had to live with
limited resources and in poor conditions. The saddest part is that all their suffering
was caused because of discriminations. Just because they were different and
basically hate went out of control. There everyone can see the importance of teaching
values to new generations in order to avoid situations like this one to
occur.
