Sandra Cisneros |
Title: The House
on Mango Street
Author: Sandra
Cisneros
Date: 1983
Setting (time and place): This
piece of literature takes place in The House on Mango street.
Event (conflict, important
information, touching passage, question): This story begin
with the story of Esperanza's family moving to a new house. The first house
that the family owns. Moving to a new house also means moving to a new
environment in which Esperanza is able to witness different social problems
such as poverty and crime.
Characters:
Esperanza
Cordero: She is Chicana and the narrator of the story. She is only
twelve years old. Through the story it is evidenced her change from being a
girl to a woman.
Nenny: Her real
name is Magdalena and she is Esperanza's little sister. Esperanza is always
taking care of her and their relation is not the best.
Mama: She is
originally from the United states. She is very admired by Esperanza.
Papa: Esperanza’s
father. He is from Mexico. He is full of dream and ambitions about having a new
house.
Carlos y
Kiki: They are Esperanza's younger brothers. They are secondary characters
of the story and appear to be a point of comparison between male and female in
the story.
Memorable
quote / favorite part: I liked the Vignette that is
called "Laughter" because even though the relationship between
Esperanza and Nenny is not so good, or At least Esperanza doesn´t feel proud
about her sister, Esperanza admits that there are some features that they
share.
How did it make me feel? / can I
make any connection to my life?
Something that called my
attention was the way in which Esperanza started to change from a little girl
to become a woman. In some cases, she was being judged because her way of
dressing since "a little girl shouldn’t use high heels." I think that
most of us went through a situation like that at some point of our lives in
which we believe that nobody understands us. I think that this condition may
even be harder for Chicano people since they have this mixture of cultures and
the feeling of not belonging that it carries.
